Rhodohypoxis

Native to South Africa in the Drakensberg alpine zones Rhodohypoxis is commonly called "Sterretjiesgras" in Afrikaans or "Rosy Posy". It's a species of flowering plant in the family Hypoxidaceae and it grows in damp meadows in summer.

Rhodohypoxis can be grown as a ground cover in morning sun with afternoon shade, they’re also suitable for growing in containers or granite troughs for alpine and bonsai displays. Keep the soil damp during dry summer weather, but allow them to partially dry out during the winter months. They're frost tolerant as they come from the high altitudes of the Drakensberg that receive snow and frost during winter. Plants will start to flower about 6 weeks after spring/summer rains start in the eastern parts of SA. The flowering period is usually for the first half of summer. Some varieties will flower early like Rhodohypoxis 'Albrighton', other varieties like Rhodohypoxis 'Pintado' will flower a few weeks later. By combining different varieties or species you can extend their flowering season by a few weeks.

Rhodohypoxis has eye-catching flowers that open throughout early to mid summer, held above hairy green leaves. Plant corms 3cm deep in well-drained, humus-rich, neutral to acidic soil. Deadhead spent blooms of Rhodohypoxis and Rhodoxis to prolong flowering and mulch with leaf mould in autumn.

Growing guide

1.) Morning sun, and afternoon shade. They don't like to bake in full sun the whole day.

2.) Watering twice a week during summer.

3.) Let them dry out and go dormant during winter.
