How to plant your bulbs
POTS
Below you can see some basic directions on planting your bulbs in pots this season.
Planting depth: between 5cm for smaller bulbs, and 10cm for larger bulbs.
Soil: 25% perlite, 25% fine river sand, 50% potting soil mix.
Watering: once a week in cold weather, more often in warmer weather.
Full sun plants*: Mostly 4 to 5 hours full sun in pots is more than enough.
THE GARDEN
Below you can see some basic directions on planting your bulbs in open soil this season.
Planting depth: between 5cm and 12cm (species dependant).
Soil: A good free draining soil will suit most plants.
Watering: once a week for 30 minutes soaking should keep them happy.
Full sun or shade? Check individual species which prefer shade, semi-shade, or full sun.
Keep in mind that the majority of geophytes are deciduous. This means that they have a specific growing and flowering season, and the other half of the year they will retreat underground to their bulbs. The bulbs will regrow every year when the time is right. Different species from different climate zones will grow at different times of the year, but can mainly be split into summer growing or winter growing species. Some geophytes have a long lifespan reaching 30 to 40 years or more in some cases, other species might only live for 3 to 5 years and new generations need to be grown from seeds every few years.
*TIP: Don't let pots stand baking in full sun the whole day. Bulbs don't like to sit in wet soil and experience heat around their roots. This will cause them to rot. They like their roots and bulbs to remain cool when growing and receiving water. The leaves and flowers will appreciate direct sunlight to photosynthesize for a few hours per day.
