Strumaria prolifera is arguably one of the most enigmatic and elusive members of the genus. Its name, "prolifera," doesn't refer to its abundance in the wild—quite the opposite—but rather its tendency to "proliferate" by producing numerous small offsets.
This species is a true narrow endemic. It is known from only one tiny location in the world: the Kourkammaberg, an isolated quartzite mountain in Namaqualand.
